Photo by David Corio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A panel of women, starting with <a href=\"http:\/\/penelopespheeris.com\">Penelope Spheeris<\/a>, regaled a packed house on lecture night at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annenbergspaceforphotography.org\/exhibitions\/current-exhibition\">&#8220;Who Shot Rock&#8217;n&#8217;Roll&#8221; exhibit <\/a>at the Annenberg Space for Photography in L.A. The film director showed excerpts of her<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y9KCS8d82EM\"><em> Decline of Western Civilization<\/em><\/a> films, from punk to metal, with terrific tales, and admitted the scene with Ozzy Osbourne and the orange juice was staged, and that being on the road with him would cure anyone of shooting rock&#8217;n&#8217;roll.\u00a0<em> Really?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next up was my former partner-in-wild&#8217;n&#8217;crazy-times at MTV, Gale Sparrow, who described how those tentative early days turned into the media and cultural phenomenon &#8212; seemingly overnight.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/robertacruger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/buggles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65\" title=\"buggles\" src=\"https:\/\/robertacruger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/buggles.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robertacruger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/buggles.png 523w, https:\/\/robertacruger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/buggles-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Buggles &#8220;Video Killed the Radio Star&#8221; &#8211; MTV, August 1, 1981<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sparrow spotlighted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9a8Pkw9VBR8\">The Stray Cats<\/a> and how their music video created a sensation, selling albums and selling out shows in &#8220;Podunk&#8221; towns where MTV aired, putting the band on the map and grabbing the attention of EMI Records. Then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CxTE3YlV1vM\">&#8220;I Want My MTV&#8221;<\/a> ad ran in markets where cable television companies refused to add the channel. David Bowie, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PIb6AZdTr-A\">Cyndi Lauper<\/a> and The Police told kids to demand their MTV, forcing the hand of the cable biz. Resistant record labels started forking over music videos, advertisers started investing in the much-coveted 14-25 year-old viewers, films, fashion and television imitators joined the bandwagon. She took the audience on a trip through the burgeoning music video days through the boom as she and &#8220;The Girls&#8221; of record label publicity departments figured out what to do with all the &#8220;promo clips&#8221; (as they were called in 1981).
